About Tonight’s Guests

Carol Mack-Wells

Carol Mack-Wells, Mother of the author Ryan Mack taught her sons everything they know about financial literacy. Although bringing up her children with modest means, she was able to instill within them a sense of contentment to be happy where you are today, but ecstatic about the bright future of you will achieve tomorrow through hard work. Her section is placed after the budget section because she was able to stretch the dollar in the household to not only continue to put food on the table, but was able to move up the ladder of success to become the first African-American Director of Admissions for the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

Today, as she prepares for her retirement, she currently serves as the Vice Chancellor of Student Services for Wayne County Community College in Detroit, Michigan. A product of education herself, she continues to advocate for education for those throughout the inner city of Detroit, Michigan as a means of economic empowerment.

Richard Mack

Richard Mack’s life began modestly in Lexington, Kentucky as the second oldest of nine children. His family moved to Detroit, as did many other southern families to pursue opportunities in the auto industry. He acquired a good work ethic from his parents very early in life, and struggled financially through college with his mother holding strong as his inspiration. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in education from Central State University, in spite of the many challenges. He went on to obtain a Master of Education degree from Wayne State University, and an Education Specialist degree from the same.

During this time, he served the children of Detroit Public Schools for 38 years before he retired in 2004. He touched hundreds of young lives first as a science and math teacher, then as a guidance counselor. His career culminated with serving as a principal who positively transformed the school as well as the neighborhood that he worked in. He continues to be driven by his love for children and the community. He is the proud father of three sons who continue this tradition of excellence.

Richard Mack

Richard Mack is married to Pamela Mack. Both are successful attorneys. They live in the city of Detroit, which is suffering from a severe depression while the rest of the country feels like it is in a recession; however, Richard and Pam seem to be impervious to the hardships of the economy. It is like they are living in their own economic bubble. They own their home, have an investment property, invest regularly into their retirement accounts, just adopted a child, can travel whenever they please, and because they are very diligent about their estate plans. I think that much of their success starts in the home because they are such a strong team. This dynamic team is so strong that they were even interviewed by Money Magazine because of their ability to navigate successfully through this volatile economy.
